Car Insurance Jeep (Car Insurance). car's body is acting like a positive?car's body is acting like a positive? My 1997 Ford Escort LX Sport body is acting like a positive instead of a normal ground and nothing is blowing. If you take a tester to the battery on the ground and touch the frame it lights up like your touching a positive of a battery. How do I fix this? I think you are saying the tester lights up if you place the negative lead of the tester on the negative of the battery and place the positive lead of the tester on the body (chassis). If so, try placing the positive lead on the engine. If it does not light you definitely have a bad engine ground, which can cause all sorts of weird electrical goings on. In some cars the engine ground is a wire that runs from the negative battery clamp to the chassis, while in other cars it is a separate ground wire from the chassis to the engine. Either way, find it and fix it. you sure you ant got the battery in back words the leads The tester you are using is a continuity checker. You'll find a battery in it. If you hook the tester to the battery ground and touch the probe to the battery ground it will still light up. Its lighting up because of a difference in voltage potential from the negative post to the chassis. You have a high resistance condition between the battery negative post and the chassis ground due to corrosion or a loose/broken connection. The test lamp is a lower resistance return path to ground from the chassis so it lights up! Touch it to the engine and the negative post and I'll bet it doesn't light. Remove and inspect the negative battery cable and connections at BOTH ends of the cable. Clean or replace the clamp and mounting points and hardware. BOTH ENDS. Reinstall, tighten and recheck. Also check the separate engine to chassis ground strap [it's there unless it is broken or fell off which is what I suspect] Do The same routine to it. Electricity is magic. A good Electricity 101 course usually clears a lot of this up! Michael said it a bit better! Unless of course you are in fact using a battery powered continuity tester as opposed to a simple voltage probe. Then Pancakes has it! dont use a light, use a volt meter. you could have a substantial volt drop across the ground and the light is picking up on that. using a voltmeter to see what the voltage is there and then testing the battery would give you what you need for the math. if the source voltage at the battery is the same that it is at that ground point, then you have a big problem. Most likely, the ground cable to the frame is corroded or loose. Just add a 12 ga or larger wire from the battery negative to a good bolt into the body/frame and you'll see it go away. Jeep . How to Adjust Headlights on a 2002 Grand PrixThe headlights of the 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix already come adjusted from the factory. You may need to re-adjust the headlamps for a variety of reasons, including being involved in an accident or driving in rough road conditions for an extended period of time. Fortunately, Pontiac has made adjusting the headlights simple by including adjustment screws close to the headlights. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Phillips screwdriver Blank wall Tape measure Step by Step : 1 Turn off the vehicle and open the hood. Make sure the vehicle is facing towards a wall or garage door or any solid surface and that the vehicle is approximately 25 feet away from the surface. 2 Locate the adjustment screws on the headlight assembly unit. The lower screw is for the low beams. The higher screw is for the high beams. Rotating the screw clockwise will raise the headlights. Rotating the screw counterclockwise will lower them. 3 Turn the aiming screw until the headlights are aimed straight ahead. A good way of checking is to stretch a string or tape measure from the center of the headlight to the wall and mark it with chalk or tape. The distance from the center of the headlights to the outer edges should be equal. Use the tape measure to make sure that the headlights are aligned properly. This step is for both the high and low beams. Tips & Warnings You may need to adjust the aim of the low beams if you can't see the road. Allow time for the engine to cool off before making any headlight adjustments.
Jeep . How to Adjust the Headlights of a BMW 525IThe BMW 525i is a luxury vehicle with a high safety rating. It provides ample room and comfort for the passengers and driver. All of that safety is jeopardized, however, if the headlights of the vehicle are not properly adjusted. Maladjusted headlight beams make it harder to see the road at night and could lead to an accident. Fortunately, BMW makes the entire process relatively pain-free with the inclusion of "adjustment screws" for the BMW 525i's headlights. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Tape measure Chalk Clean gloves Flathead screwdriver Step by Step : 1 Park the vehicle in front of a solid wall. Make sure it is approximately 25 feet away. Use the tape measure to check the distance and make sure the headlights are directly facing the wall. As the headlights are more visible at night, this process is easier to perform after sundown. 2 Use the tape measure as a straightening line and stretch it from the center of the headlights to the wall. Mark this spot on the wall with chalk or some other marking item like tape. 3 Turn off the car, but leave the keys in the ignition to the On position. This will prevent any injuries caused by the engine running, but still allow the vehicle to shine its headlights. 4 Turn on the headlights and make sure they are visible on the wall. 5 Put on the gloves and open the hood of the car. The headlight assembly should be near the front of the vehicle. On top of the headlight assembly is the adjustment screw, which is the largest screw on the headlight assembly and can only be turned with a flathead screwdriver. 6 Rotate the assembly screw. The lights on the wall will move up or down depending on how you rotate. Try to aim the center of the lights at the place marked with chalk. The edges of the light on the wall should be of equal distance from the center. Once the headlights are adjusted, turn off the vehicle and close the hood. Tips & Warnings Although these adjustments can be performed by the owner, for best results, the vehicle should be taken to the dealership. Most BMW dealerships offer free headlight adjustment. Be careful when working with the engine of any vehicle, as it reaches high temperatures in a short amount of time. Allow ample time for the vehicle to cool down before adjusting the headlights. *0 Never use anything but brake fluid in your brakes. * Never get oil anywhere near your brake system. Oil blows up rubber and will destroy the master cylinder cups and the dust boots on your wheel cylinders. If it gets on your brake linings, they won't grab the brake drum. Never get brake fluid on a painted surface. Brake fluid will destroy the paint. Never remove wheel cylinders or brake shoes, or tamper with the self-adjusting device on your brakes, without supervision. Most older vehicles have drum brakes on all wheels, but if you have a newer car, you may have disc brakes on your front wheels and drum brakes on your 2 7 A Part III: Keeping Your Car in Good Condition, System by System rear wheels or disc brakes all around. Your owner's manual should tell you what the configuration is on your vehicle. Once you know, follow the instructions in the following section(s) that deal with the type(s) of brakes on your vehicle. When you check your brakes, check one of your front brakes first because the linings wear faster on the front brakes than on the rear ones. If the first set of brakes you look at seems to be in good condition, and if your car has been braking properly, there's probably no need to check on the other three. Just remember to check a different set the next time. However, if your brakes haven't been behaving properly, then go on checking each set until you find the culprit. Before you start to check your brakes, scan the instructions later in this chapter (including the section on checking and packing wheel bearings) to be sure that you have the necessary tools and products on hand. When your vehicle is on up jack stands with at least one wheel off, you don't want any last-minute surprises! If you're unfamiliar with the tools you need for the job, see Chapter 2 for descriptions. 827

The section on checking and packing wheel bearings applies to both drum and disc brakes (but if you have disc brakes, do these jobs only under supervision at an auto class). Checking drum brakes As you can see in Figure 18-4, you have to remove a bunch of stuff to get to a drum brake. The steps in this section explain how to do so and what to look for when you finally get to your brakes. (Note: A front-wheel drive vehicle doesn't conform exactly to the following description. You can still check the brakes, but you can't repack the wheel bearings.) Arrange to do this work in a well-ventilated area, and be very careful not to inhale the dust from the brake drum — it probably contains asbestos. If you get asbestos in your lungs, you run the risk of asbestosis and asbestos emphysema. 1. Jack up your vehicle. For instructions, see Chapter 1. Be sure to observe safety precautions with that jack! Brake drums are classified as either "hubbed" or "floating" (hubless). Hubbed drums have wheel bearings inside them. Floating drums simply Jeep .
